| LOBBY DAY IN SPRINGFIELD |
- On April 17, 2002 over 600-800 people took part in an
organized lobby effort in the Capitol Building. Tom Frederick, CEO of Elm
City, and Jim May, Executive Director of Pathway, went together to meet
with Senator Demuzio and Representative Watson. Both Sen. Demuzio and Rep.
Watson indicated they support our cause, but they also made clear that a
permanent solution is going to be very difficult. There are many groups
making the claim that their cause must be number one on the state's
priority list. Any solution will be a band-aid until the elections are
over and the revenue picture changes. They both said that DHS is telling
them that all the issues will be worked out, but letters/meetings from
people in their districts are giving a very different story. They are
hearing about the difficulties many families and organizations may face.
The state simply does not have the current income to match it's expenses.
Overall the effort was a success. It demonstrated that the legislature is
hearing the efforts people are putting in. We need to continue sending
letters.
