WHERE – Illinois College Track
WHEN – Friday, June 24, 2005.
STARTS - 5:00pm and goes all night
NEED – Volunteers to help set up equipment and
Luminarias
The annual Relay for Life will happen at Illinois
College on June 24, 2005. Elm City is a corporate sponsor. The event lasts
all night with activities scheduled at various times. It is a terrific
opportunity to support a community based program and remember anyone you
know who has had or has cancer.
We have also volunteered to take on responsibility for
the luminaria that will circle the track. The luminaria includes about 1,000
bags with a candle placed in sand. The bags need to be set up at about 6:00
pm. They will be lighted at dusk. We need as many people to help with this
as possible to set up bags and light candles. Candles will need the
long-nosed lighters that can reach down in the bag. I am just guessing we
need about 15-20 people to get this all done. Here are some of the
activities we are needing:
·
ECC tent setup will be done earlier in the day about noon.
·
Bags filled with sand and moved to several distribution sites.
There may be a small amount of sand in each bag but the total sand needed is
fairly large and heavy. This can be a good community activity for any day
program group that wants to go to IC and help in the morning or afternoon.
Make sure to record it as community activity. Wagons and carts would be
great additions to move the bags and sand. ECC groups should take water if
you are going to do this during the day. There is water on the field. This
activity can easily last 3 hours depending on how many people help. Day
program groups do not have to stay all day.
·
A candle goes into each bag.
·
Bags get lined around the track at about 6:00pm. I am just
guessing this will take about 1 hour.
·
Candles get lit at dusk. (8:30?) Probably need 10-12
long-nosed lighters with people to help. Should take about 30 minutes with
enough people.
·
Luminarias need to be taken down. Candles and bags get
collected. Sand dumped back in a pile. IC may allow it to be thrown on the
field, but do not plan on that. Some people will probably take some bags
home. A few will likely burn.
Other than that come and be part of the activity. Walk
the track, meet people. Stay 20 minutes or all night it is up to you. |
